custom distro using remastersys

Remastersys is a free and open source script for Debian, Ubuntu-based, or derivative operating systems that can:

* Create a customized Live CD/DVD (a remaster) of Ubuntu and its derivatives.
* Back up an entire system, including user data, to an installable Live CD/DVD.
* Live usb installation can be done using the previous post.
* To create a custom distributable copy of your current Ubuntu system and share it with your friends.

To install remastersys in computer type in your terminal,

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add the following line to the end of the file. Save and exit

deb remastersys/

Update the sources and install Remastersys

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install remastersys

To start the remastersys, go to System -> Administration -> Remastersys Backup

Close all other applications before opening remastersys

Look at the screenshot

Remastersys will proceed to do the task that you have specified. This will take a long time, depending on the number of applications and files in your system.

You will receive a prompt when the backup process is done. The backup cd filesystem and iso can be found at /home/remastersys/remastersys folder.

If you have Virtualbox, Qemu or VMware installed, you can test the iso file by loading it in a virtual machine.

live usb installation

we can easily create a live usb using UNetbootin. use the following procedure in creating a live usb

open terminal and type

to download the bin file of unetbootin

make it executable by typing

chmod u+x unetbootin-linux-319

you have to install p7zip for the proper working of the software

sudo apt-get install p7zip-full

now type:

sudo ./unitbootin-linux-319

to start the application. look at the screen shot

you can select the distro given in the drop down menu if you don’t have the iso of the distro. it will be automatically downloaded from the corresponding website.

it will be better to choose the next option if you have the iso file of the distro. pls enter the path to the iso file.

plug the pendrive to the usb port and select ok, after a few minutes, depending on the size of your distro, it will be installed to the pendrive.

reboot and boot from the usb. here it goes………
